ABOUT ME

Monica Cortez Headshot_edited.png

Originally from San Antonio, TX, my expansive imagination was expressed through many years of acting, which motivated me to move to New York City at the age of 18.  There, I completed conservatory training at the William Esper Studio with  Terry Knickerbocker.  Eager to understand more about my culture, I enrolled in NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study with a focus on Latin American Studies and Theatre Arts.  An acting role led me to the Sundance Film Festival, where I was motivated to broaden my storytelling through film making.   At NYU's Kanbar Institute of Film and Television, I immersed myself into all aspects of the film making process.  After completing my degree, I lived in Mexico for over three years, exploring the country’s rich and diverse arts, heritage, and way of life.  Inspired to create work that celebrates both Mexican and American culture, I returned to the U.S.A and collaborated with many wonderful artists in Ashland, OR.  I recently relocated to the Los Angeles area to deepen my dedication to amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities and telling stories that connect us all.
